Show 149 - NO!

airing Sunday, Sept 30 from 8-11 PM EST and again Monday, Oct 1 from 1-4 PM EST

Sometimes you just have to say NO. Sometimes you'll hear "a thousand times NO" but for this show we'll divide that by 40 and hear 25 NO songs. The government tells you to just say NO, at times it feels like there's NO way out, and believe me, when the lady says NO, she means it.

Accentuating the negative....

Saga - NO Regrets
Saga - NO Stranger
Djam Karet - The River Of NO Return
Peter Gabriel - NO Self Control
Peter Gabriel - NO Way Out
Zaragon - NO Return
However - NO Cows
Gentle Giant - NO God's A Man
Crack The Sky - Virgin...NO!
Tantalus - Can't Say NO
Robin Trower - NO Time
Eloy - Point of NO Return
The Who - I've Known NO War
Metaphor - Yes & NO
Frost - NO Me NO You
East of Eden - Song For NO One
David Gilmour - There's NO Way Out Of Here
Niacin - NO Shame
Nathan Mahl - NO Vacancy
Wishbone Ash - NO Easy Road
Dug Dug's - Yo NO Se
Enchant - See NO Evil
The Flower Kings - The Sum of NO Reason
Led Zeppelin - NO Quarter
Deep Purple - NO NO NO

A mix of fusion, rock, prog, and more prog.....with a few non-Moon cuts. The Zep is the live version. A few I've not (there's that word again) heard or have recently sampled. And a bad ass Purple song to take us home.

NO excuses!

Oops! It is now.

I usually type them in manually but this time I copied the link and used the link tool in the edit menu. It puts http:// in the URL box and my URL already had a http:// so the link wound up with 2.

Funny how it works out. The impetus for the show was the Purple song. Then I started thinking of all the names, and the first track from "Time and a Word" crossed my mind (that has two NO's in it). I must have forgotten about it when the final list was formed.

Having seen Ringo on every one of his All-Star band tours save the latest (I didn't know any of the artists he toured with last time out), I've had to endure that No No song. That video clip is funny and is probably the worst rendition of that song.

If there's to be a follow-up No Show, how about No Such Thing.

Really? I always thought that Ringo Starr was a really underrated musician. I've read a lot of articles by drummers that say he had the most amazing back beat of anyone in the business.

"Although some have tried to downplay his contributions to the band, Starr's unique drumming style played a major role in the overall sound of The Beatles. To this day, many drummers list Starr as a major influence including Max Weinberg of The E Street Band, Liberty DeVitto of Billy Joel's band, Phil Collins, Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish, and others. According to Collins, Ringo is "vastly underrated. The drum fills on "A Day In The Life" are very complex things. You could take a great drummer today and say, 'I want it like that.' They wouldn't know what to do." Lennon, McCartney and Harrison have all said that Ringo was the best rock and roll drummer in the world."

Any of you skins players want to comment?

Aah Keithie, you take me too seriously. All I meant was any Joe in a bar can sing his vocal songs. Oh that flat voice....here's a list -

Honey Don't
You're Sixteen
Octopuses Garden
Goodnight Vienna
Back off Boogaloo
Snookeroo
Photograph
No No Song

His prowess and influence on the drum kit is without question I agree..

and no, I did not get the B off B joke, the video confused me. I read about a McCartney reference, and I see that it is a reference by Tommy Bolin (or Marc Bolan can't remember which). Sure sounds like Tommy Bolin's slide on that song. Please fill me in my good man...

Okey Dokey.....

This song was rumoured to have been written about Paul McCartney (it has been rumoured that "Boogaloo" was one of Macca's nicknamesl). I guess it was asking him to back off from the lawsuits against Lennon after the Beatles split. Ringo has recently claimed that the song is actually inspired by Marc Bolan of T-Rex.

Back Off Boogaloo was released in 1972, and is one of his most successful songs reaching #2 in the charts over here. The single keeping it off the top was "Amazing Grace" by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, a really KRAPP single that only your granddad would want. It was produced by George Harrison and Ringo is backed by George, Klaus Voorman, and Gary Wright. Ringo recorded a new version of the song in 1981,which can be heard on his album Stop and Smell the Roses.

Here's the original promo video from 1972. Musically I think it's pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8tATq1oxHY

The much (self) publicised Pete Doherty, of The Libertines and Babyshambles "fame", recently accused Scottish rock group Franz Ferdinand of plagiarising the riff from "Back Off Boogaloo" for their hit Take Me Out. As I haven't heard FF's song I can't comment.

Re: Show 149 - NO!

My original link was meant as a joke. However, since this has eroded into a Ringo thread, I will only say that I have seen nearly all of Ringo Starr's All Star Band gigs...

see next post!
