Re: "World" music
That's quite a link Mossy..(quite a link you got there big boy...)
It goes through a fascinating history of music for a number of years, but this nugget was toward the beginning: "The term became current in the 1980s as a marketing/classificatory device in the media and the music industry, and it is generally used to classify any kind of "foreign" (i.e. non-Western) music." Lazy, I say..... ![]() "Zoocore" is a great name under one condition...you have to pronounce it Zoh oh karet ![]() ![]() |

Re: "World" music
I suggested Rick start a thread because I thought World Music is an interesting name for a "genre", and less descriptive/meaningful then most. I also thought it would start a good discussion, and in that regard I'm patting myself on the back.
Krautrock is a descriptive term, and really doesn't imply Germany. There are German bands that are NOT Krautrock, and non-German bands that do play Krautrock. I know we can argue eternally about what is and isn't a specific genre, or what to label something. But world music to me is a stupid name, and I'm not worried about being an ugly American. There is no comparison musically between Celtic music (which does have a "sound"), the Senegalese musicians Gabriel played with, Scandanavian folk, and Salsa, all of which is likely to be called "world" music. It's a stupid term. That's all. No political agenda, no concern about being PC. ![]() |

Re: "World" music
Man, Rick...when's the last time you were accused of being PC? LOL!!
I agree that "World" is just another classifcation, one that i'd rather the rekkid stores made than myself. I've scored in "world" several times, and here I am, such a Norwegian white boy that I almost qualify as "clear" rather than white. So...America isn't part of the world? World= "anything not by white Americans"? Even Native American music is lumped into the category. I consider Clannad (Enya's family, BTW) as maybe...Pop/Irish, although when Enya (and her sister Maire) do it, it's "new age" If I may be so bold as to ask my fellow Moonfolk's endulgence~ Please cast your ears to a merging of the Prog/World genres, my latest tune "Mamaya". www.songplanet.com/zenpool It's a feelgood, latin(ish) solo piece w/ me on all instruments, chapman stick (my first!), flute, ac. guitar. World, but w/ the tools o' the prog trade. C. "Poppa Doc" Kirkendall

Re: "World" music
Hey Rick-
Thanks! We went off the air before I had a chance to reply. Real, manufactured...the line blurs. It started w/ a human voice, I took it from there. That's the 1st time that photo invoked Todd! One Yesfan said I look like "the lost love child of Wakeman and Bowie" LOL!! I was in one of my rare short hair phases, so I thought I should do a publicity photo. Glad you liked the tune, and I appreciate the support. K
