Rickter Scale Show 154 - BOC

airing from 8-11 PM EST Sunday, November 11 and from 1-4 PM EST Monday, November 12:

One of the greatest bands from my era is Blue Oyster Cult. Since their first record 35 (!) years ago, they've put out some great music. I think it would be a lot of fun to hear some.

A few songs are off limits today....Godzilla, Don't Fear The Reaper, Burnin' For You, Cities On Flame, E.T.I., Dancing In The Ruins. Sorry, you'll just have to dust off the best of collection for them.

As usual with the single artist shows, I have a key so we can follow along:

BOC = Blue Oyster Cult (1972)
T&M = Tyranny And Mutation (1973)
ST = Secret Treaties (1974)
FEET = On Your Feet Or On Your Knees (1975)
AOF = Agents Of Fortune (1976)
S = Spectres (1977)
SEE = Some Enchanted Evening (1978)
M = Mirrors (1979)
CE = Cultosaurus Erectus (1980)
FIRE = Fire Of Unknown Origin (1981)
RBN = The Revolution By Night (1983)
CN = Club Ninja (1986)
I = Imaginos (1988)

The Subhuman (FEET)
The Revenge of Vera Gemini (AOF)
The Great Sun Jester (M)
Searchin' For Celine (S)
Veteran Of The Psychic Wars (FIRE)
Siege And Investiture of Baron Von Frankenstein's Castle At Wesseria (I)
Then Came The Last Days of May (FEET)
7 Screaming Dizbusters (T&M)
Black Blade (CE)
Shooting Shark (RBN)
Nosferatu (S)
Transmaniacon MC (BOC)
Perfect Water (CN)
Deadline (CE)
Golden Age of Leather (S)
Flaming Telepaths (ST)
Divine Wind (CE)
After Dark (FIRE)
Joan Crawford (FIRE)
Don't Turn Your Back (FIRE)
In The Presence Of Another World (I)
I Love The Night (S)
Buck's Boogie (FEET)
Workshop of the Telescopes (BOC)
Take Me Away (RBN)
Tenderloin (AOF)
Teen Archer (T&M)
The Vigil (M)
Career of Evil (ST)
Monsters (CE)
Astronomy (SEE)
Blue Oyster Cult (I)

A mixture of prog (Subhuman,Astronomy,Nosferatu), Jazz-like (Monsters,Tenderloin), and all kinds of other styles. I spaced out the songs to give the most contrast and comparison.

Enjoy the trip down memory lane!

Rick, I'm glad I found this. I'm a big BOC fan. Just saw them live a few months back. I look forward to the show.

Thanks, Bob - I hope to see them again in Feb, even if it's by myself...

Still Bloom, Buck, Lanier, and the two smoking young bassist/drummers?

When we saw them it was Bloom, Buck, Radino (drums), Castellano (keyboards& guitar) and can't remember the bass player, he was a fill in. He was about the same age as the rest of the guys, maybe a bit younger. It was great show. Not too loud. We were right up next to the stage in a small club.

Great link! When done accurately, Wikipedia is great. Last I saw them, Lanier was still with them, but he was haggard as hell. The cigs and booze must have caught up with him (says he has not toured for "undisclosed reasons").

Rudy Sarzo it says on bass...he did a few records with Ozzy and some other metal band....

That's the best way to see them...sounds wonderful. Bands like that, Pat travers, king's X, dada....small clubs up close, not too loud...nirvana!

Re: Rickter Scale Show 154 - BOC

A show I would highly recommend is Frank Marino. Saw him in a very small club last month. AMAZING guitar player. The only draw back was he blew the place out. Just way too loud. If you get the chance, go. Also, the guy listed on bass with BOC,via Wikipedia was not the guy I saw.

Oh joy... Don't Sneer the Reefer. I just don't have the Soft White Underbelly to listen to this.

You're right, sorry. You did say he was a fill-in.

Funny about Marino. I have a friend who lives close to a nice sit down place, and we see tons of shows there (Al Dimeola was Tuesday night). I passed on the Marino show, I have way too many scheduled through Feb of 2008. My friend told me the exact same thing...amazing, too loud but fun.

So I missed again...but I did see Montrose last year, that was great....

I had to make the same decision on Jim Weider - hope I don't miss something special like I did with Frank Marino.

Good quote (Underbelly)...

Did you read the set list? ...none of the popular played songs on the show.

Not exactly....he does like bands such as Tears for Fears. He dislikes overplayed radio songs (and rightly so).

What's ironic is that I've heard the popular songs by progressive bands many more times than popular songs by non-progressive bands. I cannot listen to Comfortably Numb anymore, no matter how great the song is.

If a band has some played music, bfd. Doesn't make them any different. Either you like them or you don't.

What I like is a band such as this sparks memories of fun times and great music, as your posts have indicated, Bob...keep them coming!

Re: Rickter Scale Show 154 - BOC

I agree 100% with the overplayed radio songs statement. I like all forms of music, except rap. I just can't get into that stuff. ( you can't spell crap without rap ). I also have Tears For Fears in the collection. I think the state of todays commercial radio is so poor. I for one have Sirius in my cars. And the Moon on my computer.

FYI, The Soft White Underbelly was the bands original name! When I was in college, they played many area haunts under their old moniker.

I saw BOC a few times as BOC and TSWU but they never appealed to me. As I matured out of pubescence, they began to appeal even less.

I knew that, that's why I was complimenting you about the reference...

I guess they never matured either then...Bloom is 63 next month and Buck is 60 next week....

Always thought Bloom looked like that 70's show guy.

I too got reference. I am not sure if I should be insulted or not, with Vax's comment. Some of us just don't want to sit at the big people table. So we keep on listening too rock n roll and prog and in my case some classical too. Life is too short to take yourself too serious. There is always room for variety and change. No matter how old you are.

Yeah, me too. Pulled out some Climax Blues Band from the used cd bin the other day to catch up with them. What a Waynes World Dream sequence that was.

I'm so sorry. I didn't know that I was require to like everything. I will amend my ways immediately to blend in with the plain vanilla of the masses. Hereto forthwith, I will listen to more metal, more grunge, more RAP, more country, more pop, more hip-hop, more teeny-bop, more R&B, more soul and more sonic droll. Sheesh, how dare I have an opinion that I dislike a particular musical style. I forgot that being objective is more important than being subjective. I won't let it happen again.
