I've found the perfect way to completely cheeze them off.
I listen to their entire schpiel, asking all sorts of questions. I drag it out as long as I possibly can, even making like I'm taking notes on my computer. I even make smalltalk with them, telling them that I've worked in support, so I know how it feels to take abuse from customers, etc. Then when it comes time to seal the deal, I tell them that I'm not interested, but I simply enjoyed wasting their time as a public service to my neighbors. Knowing full well that they're on commission, wasting their time starts becoming VERY expensive for them.

At work and being a so called expert at English I get all the calls of those speaking English, which to say are 99% attempts of interesting me in the stockmarket. In the beginning I let the rope run but it always means another call from a more senior account manager, who are dangerous as they are competent salespersons and if actually proper English of Scottish, difficult to throw out. I now simply say "Fuck off" . Usually it works but then there's always another poor sod in the line.........

check out Tom Mabe, and his cds "Revenge on the Telemarketers", they are hilarious - he tapes the calls and screws with the people real bad! Carpet cleaner calls and he asks him how to take blood out of the carpets - lots of it and in a hurry. tommabe.com

 a new favorite is to see the number, pick it up and soon as the marketer says 'hello?'...start talking like a recorded message as follows (use your best radio like voice):"at the tone, leave a message...if you do not hear a tone....hang up and leave a message"  then promptly disconnect them   and try not to laugh
