that's it. coOKIE - the Joad family and the real life folks like them were referred to as Okies, being from Oklahoma. Not to mention they took a JOURNEY, and the DUST bowl... this was probably the hardest clue, which was why I threw in the "East of Eden" near-freebie in there...
