Wow, what a hard quiz!

John Barleycorn is a book by Jack London, John Barleycorn, or Alcoholic Memoirs. Luke is the Gospel of Luke from the Bible, written by, uh, Luke. Connection? No stinking idea....

hard? I was worried they might be too easy. Seems like my last two were easy compared to everyone else's, so I'm glad these are challenging.

You may be a little too literal here Spaz. Be a little looser in your associations and I think you'll guess #1 quickly.

This one seems to remind me of Melville. Dear Prudence - Bartleby the Scrivener, and the other two are of course Moby Dick. However, I've only ever read Billy Budd and have only a passing knowledge of the others, so maybe I'm way off.

Melville is correct, as is your reasoning for the second two clues. The first clue is simpler than your guess. 7 points for Moses...

Ernest Hemingway

8. Rush - Losing It
Galleon - Before The Sunrise
I believe that Ernest Hemingway is the answer to this one.

Rush's Losing It has a line "The bell tolls for thee" in reference to Hemingway's novel "For Whom the Bell Tolls".

Galleon's Before the Sunrise probably refers to Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises"

Did I get one!?!?!!?

how about Metallica?

Zvinki got one! Let me get up from the floor!

Could have used "For Whom The Bell Tolls". Hey you snuck Counting Crows in there, so why not?

oui, bien sur!

Hemingway is correct, as is "The Bell Tolls.." and "The Sun Also..."
I don't know if Galleon intended the Hemingway reference with their song, but I did...

Saul Bellow ...

Henderson the Rain King.

henderson gets at least a direct mention in the lyric of the song. erm maybe that's the inspiration of the song ... but I never read the book.

something makes me want to put:
Fyodor Dostoevsky .. I guess it's the crime and punishment in the titles of two of the songs.

but I can't figure out the PT reference .. and it's another one I haven't actually read.

prudence

it seems that (maybe) Melville was noted for making references to the desirability of prudence....

isn't # 11

Robert Heinlein's "Time Enough For Love"?

Saw it on the deset island post

Doesn't Sting mention Nabokov in the Police's "Don't Stand So Close To Me"? I was confused since the Ian Anderson is there twice (although it's probably intentional).

No to Emeril (Spaz)
No to Nabokov (for Moses, but good guess)
Yes to Heinlein, from the desert Island post - 6 points for Rick...

Sting does indeed mention Nabokov in "Don't Stand So..." And yes, listing the Ian Anderson song more than once was intentional.

additional info

on number one, I guess it's more a book I'm asking for than an author.

William Burroughs (Steely Dan's name) or
Sara Giffin (Home at Last) .. or I'm on the wrong track (quite likely)...
