COTM - #128 - ARTCANE, KORNET & S. HACKETT

Greetings my friends. Well, autumn has descended upon us with a nice big chill this week. The smell of warm cider is drifting through the air and soon the Great Pumpkin will rise out of the pumpkin patch. Now, of course, that has nothing to do with this week's show, but I do love autumn.

I am still pulling music from the late 70's and have a couple interesting, yet short lived groups, from France and Sweden. Those groups are Artcane and Kornet. The feature album will be from Steve Hackett.

Our first group, Artcane, is from France and was a one-and-done band. Their only album was titled Odessee which was released in 1977. Most descriptions of the group is French King Crimson from the Larks' Tongues In Aspic era. The group is made up of Daniel Locci on drums, Stanislas Belloc on bass, Alain Coupel on keyboards and Jack Mlynski is the guitarist with a very
Fripp-ian stle... The band, after this album, pretty much disappeared.

The next group is a Jazz-Rock/Fusion group from Sweden. They formed in 1974 and, unlike many of the groups lately, they have released 3 albums. Their eponymous release in 1975, Fritt Fall in 1977, and Kornet 3 in 1979. We will take a listen to their most popular release Fritt Fall. The group was core of the group was Stefan Bjorklund on guitar, drummer Ake Sundqvist, and Stefan Nilsson on Keys. They soon added Adners Jonsson on Vibes/percussion and their bassist Sten Forsman. Then they also added a large ensemble of brass, woodwinds and strings. For the 2nd album, Fritt Fall, they cut back on the ensemble a little, but it still has a full sound.

The feature album for this show is Please Don't Touch by Steve Hackett. It was released in 1978 and was the 1st solo album after his official departure from Genesis. With Steve, one always marvels at the layers of guitar that magically blends together. It is interesting that the next biggest thing that is marveled after in this recording are the vocals. Certainly, Steve is not your typical lead singer, but he can definitely lend a voice anywhere. On this album, Steve brought in several guest vocalists including Steve Walsh of Kansas, Richie Havens of Woodstock fame (Freedom & Here Comes the Sun), and R&B/Jazz vocalist Veronica "Randy" Crawford (Wiki her bio - a very interesting career working with what seems like everybody).

I would not say that Please Don't Touch is the a-typical Steve Hackett album you would come to expect. It is rich with surprises and was a great follow-up to his debut solo album, Voyage of the Acolyte.

Hello folks. Over the weekend music was dealt another big loss to the community. Lou Reed passed away at the age of 71. Lou Reed was instrumental to the devolopment of the punk rock movement and has truly been a one-of-a-kind performer, musician, composer and poet. He has left with a great legacy of music.

An interesting factoid: Lou is an alumni from my alma mater, Syracuse University. There he studied Journalism, film directing and creative writing.

Wikipedia has the following description of his time at SU in the early 60's.
" In 1961 he began hosting a late-night radio program on WAER called "Excursions On A Wobbly Rail." Named after a song by pianist Cecil Taylor, the program typically featured doo wop, rhythm and blues and jazz, particularly the free jazz developed in the mid-1950s. Many of Reed's guitar techniques, such as the guitar-drum roll, were inspired by jazz saxophonists, notably Ornett Coleman. Reed graduated from Syracuse University's College of Arts and Sciences with a B.A. in June 1964. While enrolled at Syracuse University, he studied under poet Delmore Schwartz, who he said was "the first great person I ever met," and they would become friends. He credited Schwartz with showing him how "with the simplest language imaginable, and very short, you can accomplish the most astonishing heights." Reed dedicated the song "European Son," from the Velvet Underground's debut album, to Schwartz. In 1982, Reed also recorded "My House" as a tribute to his late mentor. He later said that his goals as a writer were "to bring the sensitivities of the novel to rock music" or to writeThe Great American Novel in a record album."
