Talking Extended Play - November 24 Set

Welcome to Extended Play! For this week's show, I've got a full 3 hours worth of live and studio tracks on the slate (like every other week ).

First up is the newly issued remaster of McDonald & Giles' self-titled album from 1970. After splitting from King Crimson on the US tour in 1969, Ian McDonald & Michael Giles set out to capture the sound that they felt was truest to their own visions. This is often cited as the perfect compliment to King Crimson's second album, 'In The Wake of Poseidon'. Listen close on Flight of the Ibis as it's the original melody from Cadence & Cascade, further developed by King Crimson for 'In The Wake Of Poseidon'.

The second album of the night is Mike Oldfield's album 'Exposed'. This one's a live set released in 1979, presumably assembled from the tour for 'Incantations'. It includes Incantations and Tubular Bells, as well as Guilty to close out the set. This is the third (and in my opinion the best) recorded version of Tubular Bells.

Finally, we have a true classic with 'Close to the Edge', Yes' final album of the 70s with Bill Bruford. This album is noted by some Yes fans as the last "true" Yes album. Their follow-up album 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' still holds true in sound to Yes, although it is most definitely the height of Long-Form progressive rock. Each song is a side-long piece, bringing the album to 4 sides. Even still, 'Close to the Edge' is possibly Yes' finest hour with beautiful melody and harmony out the wazoo.

I digress

Sorry, but the Yesspaz must object to the calim that CttE is the last "true" Yes album. Anyone who says that is not a "Yes fan," but a "likes-TyA-Fragile-CttE fan."

Secondly, the phrase that Tales "still holds true in sound to Yes," is extremely hard to defend. Who defines what Yes sounds like, fans or Yes themselves. Yes does not sound like Ctte; Ctte sounds like CttE. My personal favorite albums, the ones I consider Yes' finest hour, are Relayer and GftO. They don't sound like CttE at all. Does that mean that they don't sound like Yes?

I'm going to go request "That, That Is" now.

Yesspaz, a fan of all music, out.

If Then

Duly noted Yesspaz.

Still, I hold my post is objective in nature. I most certianly do not agree that TfTO heralds the end of Yes. In fact, IMHO it was a whole new beginning for the band.

As for what a band sounds like, I've heard this topic debated so much that I should have known not to bring it up. Specifically, it was directed towards King Crimson on Elephant-Talk (or Elephant-Turd if you are Adrian Belew). Basically, it's all nonsense at the core. A band sounds like it sounds at that point in time. Morphing and changing over time, you can't hold a band's sound to any one standard. However, I can still say that Yes sounds nothing like Pantera but at times is close in feel to other bands. Whatever the case, it's got a lot of space for interpretation.

Basically, all I can say is keep an open mind. Of course, that's what all this music is about anyway, huh?

yeah...

Hehe, yeah...

As the new guy, let me just say that you'll have to get used to my sense of humor. That whole post was a tongue-in-cheek joke.

Maybe I should change my name to Long Play for one-up-manship's-sake and request Amarok every day for a month.

Angry That's understandable

Maybe I could learn to change my IP address and request "Five Per Cent For Nothing" repeatedly. How would you like that?

Ha ha ha, My brain is... different!
