Progressive Shores starts out in Italy

Hello,

The first two weeks of Progressive Shores will feature music from the country of Italy.

On Thursday, April 17th I will be doing a show on the heavyweight bands from the country. I'll cover the most important and influential bands of the scene, including Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Premiata Forneria Marconi, New Trolls, Le Orme, and others. Some of these bands would warrant a separate show to explore their entire family trees, but this will be an overview of the bands and their role in the evolution of the Italian scene.

On Thursday, April 24th I will be exploring another facet of the Italian scene in the 1970s, that of the experimental artists. Many of these musicians were informed my minimalism, modern classical music or free/experimental jazz, and incorporated these styles into their work. Bands or artists I am interested in playing include Franco Battiato, Area, Pierrot Lunaire, Picchio dal Pozzo, Opus Avantra, and more.

I hope people will tune in for one or both of these shows, and feedback is highly encouraged.

Regards,
Sean

Playlist for Show 1

Hey,

I think we had a few server issues towards the end, but I hope anyone who tuned in enjoyed it. It was the first week and there were also some extraordinary circumstances I don't want to get into, but it still went pretty ok despite that. I'm hoping to improve the show's presentation over the next few weeks, but the music is the most important thing for me.

Anyway, this was the playlist:

1. PFM - 21st Century Schizoid Man (from 10 Anni Live, disc 1)
2. PFM - Introduzione / Impressioni di Settembre (from Storia di un Minuto)
3. PFM - Appena un Po (from Per un Amico)
4. PFM - l'Isola di Niente (from Isola di Niente)
5. PFM - Chocolate Kings (from Chocolate Kings)
6. New Trolls - Adagio (from Concerto Grosso No. 1)
7. New Trolls - A Land to Live A Land to Die (from Searching for a Land)
8. New Trolls Atomic System - La Nuova Predica di Padre O'Brien (from New Trolls Atomic System)
9. Ibis - Divine Mountain/Journey Of Life Part 2 (from Sun Supreme)
10. Banco - Cento Mani Cento Occhi (from Darwin!)
11. Banco - Dopo...Niente / Traccia 2 (from Io Sono Nato Libero)
12. Banco - Nei Suoni e Nei Silenzi (from Di Terra)
13. Le Orme - Felona / La Solituddine di Chi Protegge il Mondo / l'Equilibrio (from Felona e Sorona)
14. Le Orme - Contrappunti (from Contrappunti)
15. Le Orme - Il Vento, Il Cielo e La Notte (from Elementi)

As mentioned, this week's show will be on some of the more experimental Italian bands. I think you guys will love it.

Also NEXT Thursday I will probably be out of town, but I'm going to try and pre-record my show to broadcast while I'm gone. That show will be on brand new Italian prog from this year, including new releases from La Maschera di Cera, La Zona, Periferia del Mondo, and more!

So the first three weeks of Progressive Shores are all in Italy. Please send me your thoughts about the programming and what I can do to make it better for you, and if you have any countries you would like covered I will give them my utmost consideration.

Regards,
Sean McFee

I recorded the whole show to WMA so once I edit it I can send it to Davin in case he ever wants to rebroadcast it. I'm going to try and do that when I can.

A programming note for next week: my flight out of town leaves on Saturday and I work tomorrow. This means I really won't have time to pre-record next week's show. So, if I'm back in town by Thursday night, you will get the regularly scheduled Progressive Shores with new Italian progressive rock. Otherwise, the show will not air next week and I'll do the new Italian prog show the first week of May.

Thanks to anyone who listened, hope it was fun.

Regards,

2. Distillerie di Malto / Il Manuale dei Piccoli Discorsi (2001) / Melodia di Fine Autunno
3. Taproban / Ogni Pensiero Vola (2002) / L'Orco
4. Deus ex Machina / Cinque (2002) / Il Pensiero che Porta Alle Cose Importanti
5. Runaway Totem / Tep Zepi (2002) / Sacro Re
6. Periferia del Mondo / Un Milione di Voci (2002) / Un Borghese Piccolo Piccolo
7. Hostsonaten / Springsong (2002) / Toward the Sea
8. La Zona / Le Notti Difficili (2003) / Il Sogno della Scala
9. La Maschera di Cera / Il Grande Labirinto (2003) / Il Viaggo nell'Oceano Capovolto (parte 2)

Hope people enjoyed it.

Great stuff!

In honor of it, we're adding a whole mess of good old Italian stuff to our regular playlist - look for it later tonight!
