Show 47 - ProgDay!
Progday. Prog Day. Prog day. ProgDay. However you spell it, it's the one that started this renaissance.....and on Labor Day 2005 in lovely Chapel Hill, NC Progday XI is happening.
First we'll hear live performances from the festival, from 1998..... From the Progday '98 CD..... Crucible - Down and Out Crucible - An Imp's Tale Soundscape - Between the Sun and the Moon Discipline - Mickey Mouse Man Discipline - Before the Storm/Blueprint The Flower Kings - The Flower King/Stardust We Are Alaska - Bardanes/Reason To Wonder Alaska - Tiananmen Square A Piedi Nudi - Il Duello/LaBallerina Par Lindh Project - The Cathedral This is my only appearance at the festival, and I picked a good one. The T-Shirt is my favorite rock shirt. It was over 100 degrees, a real scorcher. Seeing Magdalena Hagberg from Par Lindh's band in shorts...well.. Crucible also played the inaugural Nearfest, and were an up and coming band. But after two CD's, I haven't heard from them in at least 4 years. The Genesis cover is brilliant, and the Imp's Tale is 20 minutes. Alaska is just Al Lewis and John O'Hara. That's it. And a wall of sound! I believe Al Lewis went to Starcastle...no not the Munsters as Grandpa ![]() Discipline was incredible. They were right on the heels of "Unfolded", and just riveting. Boud Deun (not on the CD) is always a lot of fun, and A Piedi Nudi is classic Italian prog. Cast and Brett Kull also played. After a few years of helping out ProgDay, Rob LaDuca decided to start Nearfest the next year. Little did I know what was happening... From the ProgDay 2002 Sampler CD.. Avant Garden - Dragon Feed Thieves' Kitchen - John Doe Number One (edit) Happy the Man - Service With A Smile (live at Nearfest 2000) The Muffins - Military Road (live at ProgDay 2001) The Avant Garden tune I've played before, it's got a midsection reminiscent of "21st century Schizoid Man". From The Progday X (2004) Sampler CD... Farquhar - Ah Legs Amarok - Hsieh Mats/Morgan - Hollmervalsen Trettioriga Kriget - Ljuset The Kriget has been played on Gnosis, maybe Prog Shores, here. A great tune. The Farquhar is very strange. And the Mats/Morgan...they're always a lot of fun. ![]() |
