Show 40 - "All-American Rock"

OK everyone, here's a show of songs that 90% will never make it on the Moon. The intent here is solely to entertain and rock out.

As with most things, we need focus and a theme. The theme is a simple one this week. Every artist is from the U.S., in celebration of the 4th of July.

I'm not the Jingoistic sort, so I've stayed away from the overt patriotic references, but in a few cases I did add tunes with "America" in it's title, etc. Mostly they are tunes that have an edge.

I had a difficult time with this show. A lot of uploading, little time - and a lot to leave out. I'm still only 80% done. For instance, I'm listening to Matthew Sweet right now. A perfect artist for this show. But he didn't make it........

In a few cases I threw in a progger, just to keep me honest. Next week we'll be back to Nearfest, with a 2005 Nearfest show to hear in my absence.

Jimi Hendrix - Star-Spangled Banner

I didn't even think about playing this, but saw a comment by Lotus in the shoutbox. I imagine this is a good opener...the obvious is the sometimes the hardest to see.

Grand Funk Railroad - Rock & Roll Soul

A fine starter, just good old rock and roll.

All-American Boy - Crack The Sky

A song I've seen about 15-20 times live, just a lot of fucking fun!

Hot Tuna - Water Song

I recently picked up "Burgers", and this has always been a personal favorite.

BOC - Monsters

A bit jazzy, a bit heavy. A tune from their more obscure and experimental period.

Devo - Gut Feeling/Slap Your Mammy

The first two Devo releases are such fun.

King's X - Vegetable

Who says I can't enjoy later King's X? A funky one for ya.....

Aerosmith - Seasons of Wither

Back when they were something.

Chicago - Woman Don't Want To Love Me

Anything off of the first seven records is fair game.....another shining example of Bobby Lamm's songwriting genius.

Into Another - Running Into Walls

An obscure rocking band fom NYC. The album title (Ignaurus) is hilarious.

The Cars - You Can't Hold On Too Long

The second and last Cars tune (for a good while) to be played on the Scale.

Dixie Dregs - Country House Shuffle

Keeping it fun..........

Adrian Belew - Young Lions

Speaking of fun....

Smithereens - House We Used To Live In

One of my favorite bands. Three yards and a cloud of dust, no inhibitions, just play and go!

Jimi Hendrix - Crosstown Traffic

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Apache Rose Peacock

Do not explain this song to your child. From another of my most played CD's.

Metallica - Welcome Home (Sanatarium)

My favorite Metallica tune. Surprisingly, this is actually the second time Metallica has made it here.

Steely Dan - Your Gold Teeth

A bit of contrast.

Molly Hatchet - Dreams I'll Never See

A remake of the great Allman Brothers tune (Dreams). A rare case where both original and remake are nice.

Alice Cooper - Devil's Food/Black Widow

With an appearance by Vincent Price....

Heart - Sing Child

The sexuality in this tune was a bit of a rush for a then 13-year old boy. Not that I knew what the hell that was!

Kiss - Love Her All I Can

Why not? I love Dressed To Kill. A fantastic song, with the usual pyrotechnics from the Ace, the king of the 30-second guitar lead.

B-52's - Strobe Light

Has the infamous line "I want to kiss your pineapple". By this time I WAS able to understand it!

OSI - OSI

A newer American bunch.

Richard Barone - Native Tongue

A poppist that took himself seriously. Some cool e-bow here.

Extreme - Politicalamity

From the underrated "Three Sides To Every Story".

Tool - Stinkfist

Just to prove I'm not always a happy guy.

Ambrosia - Holdin' On To Yesterday

Just had to play this again. An all-time favorite.

Dada - The Ballad of Earl Grey & Chamomile

Another of my favorite bands.

Stone Temple Pilots - Sin

I wish they would have kept making records like their debut. "Core" rocks. Oh well, another band not living up to potential (are you listening Eddie Van Halen!)

Kansas - Cold Grey Morning

From the not as well known "Freaks of Nature".

Living Colour - Desperate People

This record was something when it came out.

Pat Travers - Amagwanna Kick Booty

And that this song does!

Styx - Miss America

A jaded look at a famous event.

Happy Rhodes - Collective Heart

See description for Ambrosia above.

Ted Nugent - Home Bound

Instrumental Ted. The best kind.

Kit Watkins - Labyrinth

The version on Happy the Man's 3rd CD is also a killer. This is an outstanding tune.

Discipline - America

Another jaded look.

Happy 4th to everyone!

King's X: "If I didn't have a brain then I couldn't feel no pain! I'd be a vegetable!"

Living Colour: isn't Desperate People the big single they had?

Ted Nugent: I don't know if instrumental Ted is the best. Maybe in general, but you can't shake a stick at "Stranglehold." That song comes on, the volume goes up and there's no channel-surfing.

Agreed about the Ted. I was probably being too civil...I gotta stop that

The big single was (is) "Cult of Personality"...great tune.

OMG! KISS on AM...

Phew! Good thing I have my iPod and will be out of town.

I hope that that nobody tunes into the moon looking for a prog station; especially, those that I've directed this way.

I saw your shout...where in MD will you be?

Don't worry vax, it's the 4th of July. I doubt there will be too many new listeners. And I discussed this particular format with the powers in charge.

How about if I tell you when the Kit Watkins is playing (not on AM by the way) and they can tune in then? That will hook them.

If they hit on the Moon during the 2:37 of the Kiss tune, God bless them and those that you've directed this way that I've met enjoy a bit of that from time to time.

The many I've directed this way seem to be fine with AM....I'm not particularly worried that someone will catch AM on a time Captain Beefhart or some other drek is on.

Lighten up man, go out and take a picture of a naked neighbor with that sporting camera of yours!

I'm taking a train from Trenton to Rockville by way of Wash. DC.
There is just NO WAY I would think to drive southbound on the 4th of July weekend.

Going to be picked up by my friend who lives in Germantown at the Rockville station. We're going to Wolftrap for The Moody Blues.

Good idea about the train. By the way, I've worked at the little tavern at Rockville ........

I was at Wolf Trap last night to see the Smothers Brothers and the Kingston Trio. It was something my wife has wanted to do. I actually enjoyed it, except for the traffic. Now THERE's a non-Moon show!

One of the best concerts I saw was Yes there. It's too bad that except for the Moodies, there are very few decent shows there this year.

This will be the second time I'll be there and both times for The Moodies.

I was always a big GFR fan. Phoenix is a great album.
Freedom Is For Children would have been a good 4th theme.

Great

stuff Rick!!

Living Colour, The Nuge (I agree about Stangelhold), OSI, Kiss, Heart (os is that Hard), Chicago, and of course Tool (will you explain the lyrics). Too bad that I will be away on vacation.

Isn't Pat Travers Canadian?

Well, I wanted to play a obscure BTO tune (For Love) , but I have it only on vinyl. PT was a late addition. I did 31 tunes, and they only came up to 2 1/4 hrs...such is the fate of the short tune.

So in essence, I whiffed...good catch.

By the way, I have listening to the Isis today. Very repetitive, but cool. I like it.

Vax - GFR is a real band....I have always managed to miss them, although Don and Mel are still doing it. Oh to be a few years older.
