Show 38 - We're Djamming!
This week is a band near and dear to my progressive heart. Djam Karet is one of the best progressive groups ever assembled. You would never know it by their self-effacing nature and their rare pictures (a lot of their CD's show the band with instrument heads - my favorite is the cymbal head).
There are many types of sounds and moods to the band. One aspect of the band we will hear only as parts of songs is their ambient side. They have two records that focus solely on that (Collaborator and Suspension & Displacement). It is great for those who take to that, but I don't have the intellegence and patience. But for those who enjoy it, it's great stuff. Still No Commercial Potential and Ascension (New Dark Age Vol. 2) lean towards the mellow side also. I'll be playing a great 30 minute piece from "Commercial" on a future show that will focus on long tunes. Djam Karet made a live record at Orion Studios, one of my favorite places to go. We'll hear three songs from that CD. I had the honor being at that show. Their other live CD (Nearfest) was a hard-hitting show and we'll hear a song from that. Visit their website and drop them a line. They're great guys. Just don't let Gayle Ellett drink Jack and coke before dinnertime ![]() For the Monday replay, I'll be at Scout camp. I may pop in about an hour after the show ends to see how it went. Quite a bit this summer I will miss the chat, but hope to put together as many new shows as I can. Dream Portal (A Night for Baku) Hungry Ghost (A Night For Baku) Scenes From The Electric Circus (Reflections From The Firepool) At The Mountains of Madness (Burning the Hard City) Alone With the River Man (New Dark Age) All Clear (Live At Nearfest, orig from New Dark Age) The Hanging Tree (Ascencsion) Burning the Hard City (Burning the Hard City) I know that's redundant, but Zeppelin with Houses of the Holy on Phys Graffiti, you get my point ![]() Technology + Industry Shaman's Descent (both from Live At Orion - orig from The Ritual Continues) Reflections From The Firepool (from Orion, orig from same title CD) Going Home (New Dark Age) Ten Days To The Sand (Burning the Hard City) The Sky Opens Twice (Reflections From The Firepool) And now, most of a record that is in my top 5 ever. The Devouring is a masterstroke. It's got it all. Everything that Djam Karet has done just coalesced into a magnificent release. I would have included the whole thing but I ran out of time. From The Devouring: Night of the Mexican Goatsucker Forbidden By Rule Lost, But Not Forgotten Lights Over Roswell Myth of A White Jesus Old Soldiers' Disease The Red Thread (A Night For Baku) Oh yeah....no vocals! Black Sabbath on Mothers' Day and Djam Karet on Fathers' Day. no rhyme or reason there....... |
