This song was rumoured to have been written about Paul McCartney (it has been rumoured that "Boogaloo" was one of Macca's nicknamesl). I guess it was asking him to back off from the lawsuits against Lennon after the Beatles split. Ringo has recently claimed that the song is actually inspired by Marc Bolan of T-Rex.

Back Off Boogaloo was released in 1972, and is one of his most successful songs reaching #2 in the charts over here. The single keeping it off the top was "Amazing Grace" by The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, a really KRAPP single that only your granddad would want. It was produced by George Harrison and Ringo is backed by George, Klaus Voorman, and Gary Wright. Ringo recorded a new version of the song in 1981,which can be heard on his album Stop and Smell the Roses.

Here's the original promo video from 1972. Musically I think it's pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O8tATq1oxHY

The much (self) publicised Pete Doherty, of The Libertines and Babyshambles "fame", recently accused Scottish rock group Franz Ferdinand of plagiarising the riff from "Back Off Boogaloo" for their hit Take Me Out. As I haven't heard FF's song I can't comment.
