Peter Gabriel
Well Genesis played last Friday in Hamburg and followed on the following Tuesday by Peter Gabriel - so it was another trip of 600 km to see of of the "greats".
PG's gig was different by far to Genesis. Basically it was outdoors and 10 times as less listeners (3000). This was a luxury in more than one sense. Getting out of Hamburg was easy this time so I was home much earlier and of course one wasn't that far away from the stage. I was though further back for the sounds sake, but PG doesn't play loud anyway.
Having seen PG 4 times before this time he was back to basics as there were no gimmicks - just plenty of florescent lights at the back (see photo). With PG were the usual gang Tony Levin, David Rhodes, Peter Gabriel: Keyboards, Vocals, Angie Arnold : Keyboards, Richard Evans : Guitars, Flute, Ged Lynch: Drums .Melanie Gabriel: Backing Vocals & Samples. The big difference from earlier gigs with PG was what he played. He played what the fans have said they wanted to hear and that is songs from his first 4 albums. And that is what he played.
The Rhythm Of The Heat
On The Air
Intruder
DIY
Blood Of Eden
Moribund The Burgermeister
I don’t Remember
No Self-Control
Lovetown
Schnappschuss (ein Familenfoto)
Steam
Mother Of Violence (vocals Melanie)
Humdrum
Big Time
Not One Of Us / Du Bist Nicht Wie Wir
Lay Your Hands On Me
Digging In The Dirt
Solsbury Hill
Sledgehammer
In Your Eyes
Yes and he sang a bit in German. And he spoke a lot of German (from a script but also a bit without a script) He stayed mostly behind his keyboard but he did take control of the stage especially towards the end by moving around and down to the crowd. Being a crafty fellow he made sure of 3 encores and getting the crowd behind him. So for a PG fan this was a great gig with just the old hits and a couple of tunes I've never heard live. The only disappointment was his daughter Melanie who doesn't have a stage presence and singing solo didn't have any power behind her voice. Tony Levin was great as always - I know of no other better bass player except of Chris Squire while David Rhodes only had a 6 second solo.
PG is coming to Dk in August but it's already sold out (part of a festival) - I'm trying other channels to see him again - it was fun.
