I don't think they mind the "jam band" label. They
do improvise in a live situation, so I guess it's not entirely misleading. If you check out those live shows at archive.org or elsewhere, you'll see that a particular tune called "Jimmy Stewart" keeps popping up in the playlists. "Jimmy Stewart" is improvised, I doubt you'd even see much similarity between different performances of it. (Here's where someone downloads a whole bunch of "Jimmy Stewart"s and makes a compilation disc... an intriguing idea, indeed.)

King Crimson did (and still does) some improvising and even performed at a jamband festival in 1996 (HORDEfest, I saw them there). I'm sure they're not the only prog band to improvise on stage, but they became pretty well known for it. I never heard anyone call them a jamband though.
