The Division Bell
 

'High Hopes' is definitely a good track - in the top 10 anyway - and The Division Bell is a decent record. But many Pink Floyd fans hate it; cannot understand way. It's certainly quite progressive as well, by floydian standards.

High Hopes is ACE!!! Love The Division Bell, it is a hell of a rebound of A Momentary Lapse of Reason!!!(Though I love that album as well :D )

I just bought the excelent DVD "In the Flesh" by Roger Waters, and made me recover the lost love for this great band.

Echoes, hah? I feel like Yesspaz awhile back on the Genesis thread, when he didn't get the adoration of Supper's Ready - that's how I feel about Echoes. It would have made a great 5 minute song, in my opinion, but they drag it on and on and on and when are we going to get to the nowhere that this song goes?

I also don't get the general dislike of Momentary Lapse - while probably less progressive than much of their stuff, I think it's a pretty good album overall.

Favorite 5 tracks - tough call, as I like almost everything they've done, but few really stand out for me. How about:

Side 2 of DSOTM (I know that's cheating but tough)

Shine On You Crazy Diamond
Learning To Fly

Wow - a harsh critique of Echoes. I agree to a certain extent about the length and the time it takes to move into the main portion of the tune - that is why in general I'm not a huge Floyd fan. That's also why I included Keep Talking and Dogs in my top 5 - songs that show some passion.

But what gets me is that you 'dis this tune and include Atom Heart Mother - that's way more boring than Echoes. And Echoes is a powerful tune.

Echoes and Suppers Ready are not comparable - the only similarity is the length. That's a red herring there.

If you like Gilmour tunes better than Waters (as I do) you will probably like Momentary. That's all the issue is there.

Another inconsistency is the placing of POTW (a simple acoustic #) and the somnabulent Learning to Fly as top five.

Top 500 maybe.

PoTW is unfortunately not ever included with the wonderful bridging solo that Snowy White added for the space between Part 2 and Part 1 on the 8 track. That's maybe one of my favorite moments on Animals, another woefully underappreciated Floyd album.

As for Learning to Fly . . . . The song itself may be more of a creation of Jon Carin, but it's definitely a signature piece for the latter day Floyd (pop in circumspect). So, if you're one of those strictly pro-waters floyd-ites, then you could stand to listen a bit more and talk a bit less.

Think I'll go throw on Amused to Death . . . perfect sense.

There was no mention of the version of POTW by Jim that you stated. If that's the one, OK I can see it.

My post clearly states that I like the Gilmour Floyd songs much better than the Waters. Maybe it is you, Mr. Play, that needs to read more closely and talk less.

Animals IS my favorite Pink Floyd album! Did you notice Dogs and Pigs in my top 5? That's 2/3 of the CD!!!!!!!!

Wrong? All wrong? Isn't this just opinion?

Please don't take a quote out of context like that - you say I must be a pro-Waters yet I like Gilmour's compositions better? Whew!

Finally - if you are defending "Learning to Fly" as one of the greatest Floyd tunes, I am very disappointed.

Sorry if that came out wrong. I forget that most people don't know I speak mostly tongue-in-cheek here.

But yes, Learning to Fly is really a great pop song(Course, I still like WYWH more). Guess it must just be because I'm a child of the 80s. Oh well, so be it! I love all things Floyd.

(Hmm, maybe I can do an all floyd, but not the same bands show of EP . . . )

Dark Side of the Moon DVD
 

Anyone got this? I'll have it in the mail box tomorrow, hopefully.

It's a (BBC?) documentary about the making of the album and features intervjues with the people involved, band members included, of course.

Man, I'm all over this damn thread . . .

Just picked that up yesterday. IMHO, it's worth it for the extras alone (Gilmour playing solo guitar parts, Wright playing the piano part from Us & Them, Waters doing Brain Damage on acoustic guitar, Gilmour & Alan Parsons going through the mixing and pointing out individual track doubling and effects). The documentary is supposed to be top notch also, but I've just been too busy to check it out yet.

hehehe - I was wondering how long it would take before somebody jumped on "Learning To Fly". I expected it, but that wasn't just bait - I do like the song. I did not say it was one of their best, just one of my favorites. I particularly like the lyrical content. And it is not attempting to be an epic - it works perfectly as a fairly simple 5 minute song.

I do like Atom Heart Mother better than Echoes. It's a bit disjointed, but I think it says and does a whole lot more than Echoes. I stick to my original statement - Echoes is a great 5 minute song. At 23 minutes, it's mediocre. The other factor is I probably heard Echoes more times in any single high school year than I've heard Atom Heart Mother in my life - so the "familiarity breeds contempt" factor may be coming into play.

Including POTW was probably trolling on my part, tho I do enjoy the simplicity. Thanks for biting... :D
