Show 128 - "PT pt 2"

Sunday, 5/8 and Monday, 5/9

Let's finish the profile of Porcupine Tree started in ealy April. This time we will hear all of In Absentia, Deadwing, and Fear of A Blank Planet. "Fear" is brand new, and is quite exciting musically, but quite negative lyrically. The first tune will really make you think. On the long track Anesthesize, you'll hear about a minute of Alex Lifeson and later on on Way Out of Here you'll hear Robert Fripp.

The Tree is touring presently, catch them if you can.....

I was going to write more, but I got caught up watching them live on you tube and then a bunch of Mexican kids doing Iron Maiden....

This will be last of the artist spotilights for awhile. Look for about of month of full CD's, then some fun themes and artists.

Id like to Add that "In Absensia" it the finest DVD-Audio Recording in my collection.
This means it is mixed a 6 separate Channels surrounding you with an Audio event. The Production in 5.1 is Top Rate and An Album of theYear in Audiofile Circles...
Deadwing , a less creative outing, is also stunning as a 5.1 recording.........try it, youll like it

so, seeing that I'm an PT noob, which album would you recommend? I watched the video for Fear of a Blank Planet, and man, that's a dark song.
now I'm watching Blackest Eyes, and it's great. I tend to like a bit of melody in my songs, so, let me know which I should get on iTunes.
I'm thinking I'll like these guys a lot.

The early records (Downstair, Sunday) are almost new wavey, and Sky Moves Sideways has a definite Floyd vibe. Signify starts the transition, then the run of CD's (Stupid Dream, Lightbulb Sun, In Abstentia) are just great. Deadwing is a small step down, and the new one just a small step again, but still excellent.

I'd start with one of the three in parentheses.

I'm sure many others can share more ideas...

Sharc always the sound king :iheartyou

Yeah, Rog, it's really hard to say to someone, try this PTree album because they do tend to switch their sound a lot. Basically, I'd ignore anything before Stupid Dream; they were very experimental and self indulgent up to that point.

My preferences are for the last three...In Absentia, Deadwing and Fear...

...you could try listening to Rick's show and seeing what strikes your fancy..:-))

thanks guys. I'll probably get In Absentia, the previews on iTunes were good, and several of the youtube video that I liked were from that album.

looking forward to some new music!
