some tunes to share...

I've posted some mp3s from a band I was in awhile back (early 90s...) called NAAD. they're a mix of jazz-prog (perhaps more jazz than prog, but you tell me).

I played keyboards and did a lot of the writing. anyway, check them out and let me know what you think. I've been wearing the hairshirt lately anyway, so I can take it... :notsure:

the files are down toward the bottom of the page. apologies upfront for clams and other acts of nature...

Re: some tunes to share...

so, just to add to the music, here are a couple of tunes that wrote while my students at school were composing:
http://www.rogergrow.com/music/electronic/growbot.mp3
http://www.rogergrow.com/music/electronic/comet.mp3

they were written in MusicTime, a notation program, and then I brought them home as midi files, then I played around with them in GarageBand.

I had a feeling this list was full of talented people, and I keep hearing this more and more! Nicely done Roger! A bit different from the band material, which I liked too! I'll bet with a real drummer this would really kick! :D

Re: some tunes to share...

thanks, Andy! you're absolutely right about the drummer. the drum lines are the easiest to just copy/paste, and I haven't taken the time to individualize them.

maybe someday I can get my kit put back together and have a go at them...

(where's the divorce emoticon...) :D

Re: some tunes to share...

I didn't realize you had a kit, you multi-instrumentalist you! I love drums. I miss the days when I rented a room from a drummer and had access to his kit while he wasn't on it...that was fun! Or he would play the piano (he was a great composer too) and I would (attempt to) play drums for him. ;)

Re: some tunes to share...

hey RG~ i liked them both, but Comet is a standout!
nice synthbass growl, good lead. it reminded me of a rol. juno.

'great to see you getting back in the game!

Re: some tunes to share...

thanks, k! I'm not doing much new writing (yet!), but having some fun remixing these tunes in GB. much better sounds than good ole' quicktime!

here's one more:
http://www.rogergrow.com/music/electronic/rogmod.mp3

I'm not really satisfied with the mix yet, but I thought I'd let it live a while, and see where it should go.

anybody want the midi files to fitz with? kirk? andy? :D

you can grab 'em by just substituting .mid instead of .mp3 for the file name...

Re: some tunes to share...

hey RG~
Very nice! re:midi files- I can get quicktime to play them through
(what must be) the wavetable synth in Windows (ick), which alters the sound,
but i could do much more if i had the individual track files.

if you'd like, PM the drum files , i'll run them through either Drumcore,
the KARMA or the Fantom, send you AIFF/wavs.
A little convolution reverb....

As far as bass goes, i have the Marcus Miller, John Patitucci (SP?),
Abe Laboreal Sr. exp. board in the Rol.XP.
I could run the lead through a variety of sources, let you choose
which you like. I'm thinking the arturia minimoog or the jp-8000?

This might make a good "midi 101" for Moonies interested
in the nuts and bolts o' computer music...? i know Jim's interested...

Re: some tunes to share...

thanks!

well, when I open the midis in BG, they come in as separate tracks. so let me think about splitting them off for you. I would love to have the drums seriously thwacked! I have a busy week, but I'll get to it this weekend.

minimoog would be cool...

eventually, I'll crack out the old sq-80, and start driving some real synths... :D

Re: some tunes to share...

Woo Hoo! Roger's on a Roll!
I'm not sure if I remember this right, but isn't there a MIDI 1 and MIDI 0 (or 2), one of which saves the individual tracks? Does GB give you those options Roger?

Not sure about how much time I will have this week, but I would like to have a go at this once Kirk is done, I am hearing things :yougo

Re: some tunes to share...

hey Andyyy~
If you know a way to open the midi file in Sonar, let me know.
A R click has QT hitting me up for "pro" service.

I've never done a midi-based collab, should be interesting!

Re: some tunes to share...

these come out of MusicTime as midi Type 1, which open as separate tracks in either GB or Finale. it will be fairly easy for me to open these in Finale and dump out separate midi files for each track. I'll do that this weekend.

Re: some tunes to share...

RG~ i have them!...damn, i'm clever....

Andyyy- in the Explorer window, change the track to .mid, send a
shortcut to the desktop.

Navigate Sonar to the file, open. As they say in the symphony,"Viola!":smirk:

Hey Kirk,
Glad to be of help!
:-o~

(Actually a double click on any midi file should open the file if the .mid is associated with Sonar, otherwise File Open and browse your way to the file).

Re: some tunes to share...

thanks anyway bud!
The problem was that it has to be embedded somewhere in the computer,
which with QT being a streaming app, it isn't.
clicking on the converted file in IE only brought up QT
playing the midi file through my "comes with" windoze synth.
Otherwise, yes, clicking a .mid file would launch the default player,
in this case, Sonar.
I've done a bunch of midi, but never a collaboration,
so learn as i go. it's good timing, i recently upgraded to Acid 6pro.

One limitation i've found (for future reference), is that converted
mp3 to midi retain panning, so i can only do so much to the mix.
I PM'd RG for the files panned Center.

Re: some tunes to share...

I'll look at them tomorrow at school in MusicTime and see if there's any pan info that I'm missing, but I've never seen an option. maybe if I bring them into Finale, I can tweak the panning there.

(I've been thinking a bit more since I replied to your email...) :D
