and a little bit of Moses.....

This week I'm ceding control of the song selection (let's call it arranging instead of composing) and playing some songs suggested by our esteemed and respected (even if Counterparts isn't on the Moon:D ) Owner, Program Director, and guiding light, Jim Brennan.

These tunes have a connection, I think they're all PITP (Prog In the Park?) bands. I'll find the thread post and link it here.

The final four tunes are from Moses, who's been singing (or at least pretending to sing) the praises of Umphrey's McGee, a very interesting band who had flashes of Hornsby, Dregs, the Dead, with humor and killer fusion sensibilities. They can stop on a dime and pick it up too.

Karcius is a smokin' band

You should see Umphrey's McGee live. They are fantastic! Actually classified as a jamband. They have a style all they're own. I've been following this band for about three years and are one of my favorites. Archive.org has a bunch of they're shows for download.

Does that mean you'll stop listening to Miles Davis? I thought not!

Initially, I based that statement on the fact that my 21-year old niece has heard of them, and the only other prog she likes is Porcupine Tree (another wildly popular act).

This unscientific polling does work. At a family get together my sister puts on Dream Theater, and my mother says "How boring, it's dull, doesn't go anywhere". However, I was able to play the first Stone Temple Pilots CD without complaint.

Of course, having a moniker like "jam band' (welcomed or not), does help.

I don't think they mind the "jam band" label. They do improvise in a live situation, so I guess it's not entirely misleading. If you check out those live shows at archive.org or elsewhere, you'll see that a particular tune called "Jimmy Stewart" keeps popping up in the playlists. "Jimmy Stewart" is improvised, I doubt you'd even see much similarity between different performances of it. (Here's where someone downloads a whole bunch of "Jimmy Stewart"s and makes a compilation disc... an intriguing idea, indeed.) Jimmy Stewart Info...

King Crimson did (and still does) some improvising and even performed at a jamband festival in 1996 (HORDEfest, I saw them there). I'm sure they're not the only prog band to improvise on stage, but they became pretty well known for it. I never heard anyone call them a jamband though.

I was listening to this band before they were popular, and am glad to see them finally get their well deserved attention. Fantastic improvisational jams.
