Show 36 - "The Ed Show"
 

My good friend Ed Stephens has amassed quite a collection of jazz and fusion. He likes to supply music to a DJ who broadcasts in MD once a week (I'm listening now). The DJ says "Ed has more music than Sheik Mohammed has camels". All of the songs this week are from Ed. He will supply the CD titles once he gets one of his daughters to help him with the computer!

If you go to Nearfest, you'll see Ed. He's the guy that goes to every show around but never goes inside. He also has reserved 20 rooms, which I have one and vax has one.

The guilty parties:

Bella Band - Faidadiesis

Got a big sound, with a good old Clavinet! Excellent guitar and horns, this one's the perfect opener.

Dennis Chambers - Straight Red

No, this is not me after I quit dope. :) It's just straight-up jazz.

Magritte Voice - Warning

Cool tune with a nice rhythm.

Shane Theriot - The Apartment

Traditional fusion.

Side Steps - Morbid Lost

Fast-paced fun.

Carl Hupp Project - Black Tie Affair

You may also find Ed pimping for Carl, who is a fine drummer who associates himself with fine musicians. This tune is more heavily guitared than his others.

Mark Varney Project - So What

I played the whole CD on an earlier show. Shawn Lane and bunch of others on a wankfest.

Pete Laramee - Call The Feds

Pete is the brother of Jeff, the drummer of Sonus Umbra. He also happens to be with their singer Lisa Francis, so no ideas!

Tantalus - Moondance

A more proggy selection, in the vein of Camel (coincidentally, moondance, moonmadness...hmmm)

Conrad Schrenk Extravaganza - 666

Thunderous bass sound, and very danceable. Everytime I read the name I just crack up. Sort of like the "Joe Putz Experience":eek:

Prism - Karma

Another returnee to the Scale. Of course, it came from Ed too:rolleyes:

Wolfgamg Schmid - Lili Lala

Jumpy with nice bass. It's also what I say when I drink.

McCoy Tyner - Fly With the Wind

Thanks Cozy for softening us up with a lot of Tyner this week. Intense cut, incredible pianist....but a damn fadeout! This tune deserves better.

Tuatara - The Streets of New Delhi

Ethnic, as the title promises. Another intense tune.

The Muffins - Choombachang

I expect Batman to appear when I hear this. Great fun.

Petite Blonde - Oh So Hip

Outstanding musicianship, especially the drums.

Mr. Motaba - Speed Racer

Jazzy in the Holdsworth/Hamm/Berlin type, but a bit louder.

Yoshikazu Matsuura - Etenraka

Pretty heavy, with growling guitars and another fine bass line. An ELP sound on keys. Great tune.

Redfins - Maybe Yes Maybe No

Nice change of pace. Well-constructed tune.

The Bernd Brothers - Permanent Solutions

Another great bass line! And nice guitar picking, too.

Fragile - Belvedere

Come here boy! (remember the old Looney Tunes cartoon?).
Sweet stuff, a bit like Kazumi Watanabe.

Hugh Ferguson - The Jungle

Guitar is reminiscent of KC's "Sheltering Sky". I think this more of the African jungle than the South American jungle. Pleasant tune.

The Howland/Imboden Project - What's a fusion show without a "project"?:rolleyes: Pretty much straight jazz.

W.I.N.S. - Dance of the Harlequin

Sounds like Percy Jones on bass. Lots of jamming.

XL - Young Blood

No, not the Coasters tune! But it's almost as cool!

Tetsuo Sakurai - Brain Storm

Ridiculous bass.

Luca Donini Quartet - Krypton

Keys awesome.

Octafish - Elfer Raus

Spacey, somewhat Crimsonish. Great structure.

Ferenzik - Black Highway

Great keys and a fun beat.

Kazumi Watanabe - Robo

Japan is well-represented this week, and here's a cut from the MAN. A Mo' Bop cut.

Fonderia - Tevere

Nice electric piano. And finally an apperance by the dreaded acoustic guitar!:p

thanks, fugazifan - I cannot repeat shows without resending the information (in other words doing the show from scratch), but I will certainly keep that in mind.

Maybe I'll have a month of repeats later in the year. I will need the break by then.
