Deep Purple Child in Time / Led Zep Stairway to Heaven

I was looking for these two songs (DP Child in Time / LZ Stairway to Heaven) in the playlist, but unfortunatelly they are not in. Allthough Deep Putple and Led Zeppelin are not that what I call PR, but these two songs should be in. They are somehow in this genre, as they contain everything, what PR means. They are music where something happens!

Thank you

Lotus

as a hard rock fan

I must respectfully disagree. I love Purple, all of it. Child In Time is a great tune but I can't see how it's more prog than some of their other longer tunes.

I also has this discussion about Zeppelin, and so have many others. It's a hard call, include one gotta include a lot more.

While I respect the opinion of this suggestion, there is no way I will add Stairway To Heaven to Aural Moon. The merit of the song is not the issue; the overplaying of it on every classic rock station and every wanna-be band's playlist is. Child Of Time is a possibility. I like Deep Purple a lot, and I've been toying with adding some of their stuff for awhile. More comments to that end are welcome. And on the same logic mentioned above, "Smoke On The Water" and "Highway Star" will not be added...

you know i always have an opinion

I just don't see the point of adding a handful of songs by a band.

But if you did, Child In Time is a nice tune. It does get awfully annoying in the last two minutes, with the screaming. But except for the length of the song, it's no different from "Flight of the Rat", "Rat Bat Blue", "Pictures of Home", "Stormbringer", "Blind" or "No No No", all songs I'd readily suggest adding before adding that tune.

The Zeppelin thing gets very hairy, especially with the debate about which of ther songs is prog. (My answer is who cares). You'll never hear Achilles Last Stand or No Quarter played on classic rock stations - but that doesn't mean it should be on the Moon either.

Every time I think of this it reminds me of that annoying "Black Moutain Side" discussion we had.

Well, I've caused quite a few small riots here on the Moon trying to get about 15 Zep songs added, so I won't walk down that road again. You can search the forums for old discussions, all you folks who've arrived since.

As for Deep Purple, I've always heard that the first album is a nice piece of prog, but I've never heard it. So, this is one of those few times when I actually DON'T have an opinion.

Does this mean that My Woman From Tokyo is a possibility?

Rick and Roll 07-31-2004 01:06 AM

the zep discussion was stimulating, actually..

the first one is good, just very dated...

Woman From Tokyo is a great song.....check out Rat Bat Blue from the same record. An absolutely KILLER keyboard solo.

Yesspaz 07-31-2004 11:53 AM

Ok, you asked for it...

That stimulating Zep discussion, for all you who missed it.

just spent time reading it

it is a fine read, one of our most spirited yet.

And it shows proof that VAX agreed with Spaz! I love it!

lotus - since you started this thread, is it to your liking? or are we off track?

HA! You're not gonna believe this, but when I looked at the thread before I linked it here, I saw that remark and thought, now that's a smart fellow. I looked to see who it was and BAM!!! Ha!, I couldn't believe it was VAX! We agreed. WhooHoo! I'm not kidding, I laughed like crazy. That VAX is a cra-azy guy!

I agree with Jim in not adding the "big hits" of Deep Purple and his opinion regarding Stairway to Heaven.

On the other hand, in my opinion Deep Purples "Child In Time" has everything what PR means, and it was never extensively played on radio stations because ot its duration (aprox 10 min).

Stairway to Heaven is a classic, not belonging to whatever genre (again in my opinion). But the same argument is also valid for other classics, e.g. stuff of Pink Floyd (please understand me right, I am not comparing PF with LZ at all, there is no comparison)

I just mean, that these two songs (and I only mean these two songs) should be in the playlist for request.

Good discussion again.

Lotus has a valid point about PF being overplayed on classic rock stations. The difference is, to me, Pink Floyd is pretty much universally agreed to be progressive rock. Led Zeppelin isn't, so to be added to AM the bar may be a bit higher for the mighty Zep.

Ever notice how "Hot Blooded" from Foreigner was a total rip-off of "My Woman From Tokyo"?

Rick, as far as adding individual songs from bands - you're right, that could get crazy. But, when I become aware of good candidates, I think it's cool to add them. The priority of doing such will continue to be low, though. I still think the fact that I added "And I Moved" from Pete Townshend is cool. The fact that there's probably equally good candidates that I'll never be aware of is OK with me.

Stay tuned....

Is it a gem?

Often I hear a song from my archive of music and I say to myself, “Self, this is a gem.” I have also, in other threads, read that some listeners look forward to that gem from a particular band.

So why not gather a collection of gems from a band and not the whole album and include them in the play list? The other day I was listening to Gary Moore’s, After The War . There is a song on that album called The Messiah Will Come Again , a remake of Parisian Walkways by Thin Lizzy. This song is a gem. Is the body of Gary Moore’s music typical of the type of music on AM? No I think not. IMO The Messiah Will Come Again is 7-min.32-sec. of emotion stirring sonic enjoyment that any person with an ear for great music will enjoy. After all it is all about that emotional feedback.

Rick and Roll 08-01-2004 09:44 AM

an interesting idea for a thread

Jim picks a band, and maybe we can weigh in which tunes should be added. After a period, Jim can select from the lists and we can debate them.

Deep Purple, Zep, Queen, etc.
