Captain Beyond
I'm not asking this to create an issue, especially because I like the record, but I was curious about the inclusion on the Moon. I think it's similar to Budgie, maybe the Who, and host of other early 70's great rock and roll that may never (and to my mind probably shouldn't) make it on the Moon.

Captain Beyond.......... :)
I got into this by hearing it on a Gnosis show.
To my way of thinking it's up there with a lot of other stuff on the Moon. One of those Tweeners. :) |

Beyond straight 70's rock

The "just barely" meaning the progressive part, not the "do I like it" part. |
sounds like it was put in by the "Veterans Committee" lol:cool:

And the "veterans committe" is a reference to baseball, where if a player misses the Hall of Fame in the first 15 yrs, a veterans committee can later vote him in. OOOOHHH an American reference misses Keithie! (I'm still 8 or 9 behind lol). |

And talking of UFO shouldn't we get Strangers in the Night on the Moooooooo (Keithie takes a Magnum 45 slug in the temple):bang!: |

Hrm. Methinks you're starting to stray a bit from our 'prog' genre. I like UFO, but I don't believe they have a place on The Moon. 70s and 80s hair rock notwithstanding, natch. But then, I'm not the program director, and don't want to step on Jim's toes (especially with his Martial Arts training). |

I think Jim's answer was right on, I was just curious about the addition. Remember, I'm only playing it once. You want "straying", there's plenty on the Moon to choose from. I didn't find the last show with other Moonies' selections any more "prog"..... I better go make some money.... |
Re: Captain Beyond
"Sufficiently Breathless" is a wonderful song, musically and lyrically. I'd love to hear it.
|
Re: Captain Beyond
I'm not a big fan of either of these three bands, but I wouldn't bitch if they were in the library (well, maybe the UFO inclusion would throw me a bit). Honestly, how often are they going to be requested? And if some obsessive AM listener starts inundating the system with requests, they can always be pulled.
Thanks, Captain Obvious |

Re: Captain Beyond
hey all-
sufficiently breathless was a mainstay of college progrock fm stations in my area de the 70's. i bought the japanese import around '90 for the then princely sum of 24.95. fyi- capt. beyond was iron butterfly bassist lee dorman and (1st album)drummer mike pinera. here's a bit o' trivia- SB was sung by "hush" era deep purple vocalist rod evans. CB folded after their mentor, fellow capricorn artist berry oakley of the allman brothers died in a motorcycle accident. switch off the prog filters. this is good stuff, although some tunes have weathered better than others. we didn't know (or care) that we were listening to "prog" at the time, it was all britrock. i kinda miss that. k |

take a ride over to the thread on my show and you'll see one such song for this week. "Blind" from the third Purple record. Rod Evans can sing. I have some less complicated music but mostly the good old 70's rock to play, hope you can join in .... Hey Michael, no problem here...be interested about the Armageddon... |
Re: Captain Beyond
hey rick-
it wouldn't offend me in the least if you had led zep, the who, deep purple, procol harem, the moodys on the playlist! it'd be very difficult to point to where progressive and these bands diverged. led zep not progressive? they may not be prog... we heard all this stuff on college radio in the 70's, along w/ tunes like "time has come today" by the chambers brothers, "the revolution will not be televised" by gil scott heron, firesign theatre comedy, the nat lamp radio hour, even early synth stuff like "snowflakes are dancing" by tomita. freeform radio w/o the genre box. seriously, you don't know what you missed. k |
Re: Captain Beyond
melancolic?
|
Re: Captain Beyond
nope. i'm just hoping for a day that "prog" becomes a verb again.
"too much style without substance, too much stuff without style...." |
Re: Captain Beyond
Depends what you mean by "prog".
Many definitions today. William, i'll give this name to my son if i ever got one one day. William Bruford said that progressive rock is not a vulgar tag. And Steve Howe talks about a kinda eternal wave. Rock upgrades, i.e. it is progressive. But it's not dying, and too many rock bands of all sort, even hard rock bands, enjoy using "rock is dead", "rock is dying" within the lyrics. But if there is any rocker, let's say that Neil Young himself said rock and roll will never die. I say noone should worry about rock's end. cause it'll allways be, and the longer the better. Now, the term progressive used means the bands called as progressive rock bands are the one to listen to in order to go beyond rock i.e. to take a slow ride through life after the glauque punk. Not death. |

Edit in-- He also said you may like a Band called Blood Rock passage. He said they kind of like sound like Kansas or let me put it another way Kansas sounds like them :) |
Re: Captain Beyond
So, can "Sufficiently Breathless" be added?
|
Re: Captain Beyond
hey michael~
"bloodrock" is the band name, "passage", the big album. good rock band in their time. anyone remember bloodwyn pig, the climax blues band, copperhead...? i say- if ambrosia makes the prog list, so does capt. beyond!:rawk: p e a c e kirk |

Mick Abrahams formed them on leaving Jethro Tull after "This Was". Lots of Jazzy overtones from the Sax and Flute playing of Jack Lancaster. Excellent first two albums. Mick still plays occaisionally on the gig circuit here and is always worth seeing. After "Pig" Mick got together "The Mick Abrahams Band" and released a couple of albums. I seem to remember Rick playing "Seasons" from one of those during an early show of his. |

Re: Captain Beyond
I LOVED the first Capt Beyond..uh?.............ALBUM!!! I still put one of their songs on my "Mixed 70's" CD collections. I just can't remember the name of it. Another band from the 70's I loved, that I don't hear much about was: Three Man Army. That was Adrian Gurvitz and, I think his brother. They were an offshoot from the band....GUN (no pun intended) Gun was pretty wild too.
|
Re: Captain Beyond
oh man, Adrian Gurvitz. haven't heard that name in 25 years....
