The Origin of Species (band names)

OK. Since I was lambasted so for making my
last quizzie too hard (but it was thought provoking
wasn't it?), I'm making this one -- or at least a
few bits of it -- REALLY easy.

The moon has many interesting bands with some
very interesting names. Below imply the origin
of the band's name. Name the bands.

1. trippy song lyric: Tangerine Dream: moses
2. sci-fi show episode: Spock's Beard: JamForte
3. middle-earth history: Marillion: KeithieW
4. words not drawn from a hat: Barclay James Harvest:teermin8r
5. blues men: Pink Floyd: Yesspaz
6. far from these things (or perhaps a cat): Procol Harum: ProgDirJim
7. J.R.R. Tolkien novel progenitor: Iluvatar: RickandRoll
8. seed drill inventor: Jethro Tull: JamForte
9. horrific vision of a mutated future race: Eloy: Bob Lentil
10. a space man: Klaatu: moses

JamForte 03-27-2004 11:53 AM

I got one!!

8 - Jethro Tull

kevishev 03-27-2004 12:20 PM

Too tough for me VAX

gotta run but

7 is Iluvatar?

Try more later or Sunday.....

KeithieW 03-27-2004 01:59 PM

OK............

#3 and #7 could both be Iluvatar or Marillion if I have to pick I'd say

#3 = Marillion (Silmarillion)
#7 = Iluvatar (The creator in Silmarillion

JamForte 03-27-2004 03:49 PM

hmmmm....

maybe #2 - Spock's Beard

Rick and Roll 03-27-2004 04:05 PM

i hope not

Spock's Brain was the name of an episode and Spock had a beard in "Mirror, Mirror". But there's no episode called "Spock's Beard". Damn it Jim!

Hey VAX as we get them right can you repost the remaining clues and the score? It makes it easier.

I think it's Keith, Jam, and me each with one.......

Roit. I've given it my shot. I'll leave the rest up to you trivia hotshots.

JamForte 03-27-2004 07:21 PM

OK .. a long shot ...

#4 - hatfield & the north - cos they chose the name from a roadsign (which, I think is gone now - Keith?)

Yesspaz 03-27-2004 08:06 PM

#5 Blues Men is Pink Floyd

Rick and Roll 03-27-2004 09:29 PM

Given your inclination for accuracy, VAX, I am surprised about that answer. For the reasons stated above, that's why I didn't say Spock's Beard.

Bob Lentil 03-27-2004 11:22 PM

10. Man in Space

Doesn't say anywhere that it was the title of the
episode. Read the Spock's Beard website about
the derivation of the name (if it's still there, it has
been sometime since I've visited it).

Not something that should be a source of pride, but I know all of the words to the original episodes. (Forget about the next generation - trying to pass off Patrick Stewart as French is way in space).

I have seen the part of that website - they only say that was from the episode where he wore a beard. That's like Casey Kasem giving you info on Prog History.

I realize it's only a portion of a question, and in the scheme of things it's unimportant, but you phrased it like that was the name of the episode. They got the name from a character, not an episode. There's a distinct difference.

There - I feel better now.

Rick and Roll 03-28-2004 09:08 AM

How much easier...

Pink and Floyd were the last names of two blues musicians that Syd was fond of. I forget the first names...

progdirjim 03-31-2004 12:26 PM

Hurray for Jim... he gets #6.

Did you know this or google for it?

Still not right on #10

Rick and Roll 03-31-2004 12:29 PM

What's left and what's the score?

I think Jam has 2 (boo on Spock's Beard) and all else have one and three left?

I knew the Procol Harum. #10 was obviously a guess. And I know I've heard the story or whatever behind #9, but it's still eluding me...

think sci-fi for at least 2 of the answers.

#9 is Djam Karet - from Edgar Rice Burroughs...

and #1 - maybe Flower Kings?

It's not the Flower Kings... what song lyric would
that have been?

Your #9 answer is interesting but not it.

Novel, a film, and a recent film remake. I've not
seen the remake.
