The floor

Ah yes, but there are others that need the floor too!

Actually, I'm not available most of the day, so someone needs to pull out the rug!

I just got back from a Bach piano recital but don't remember a note that was played because I had a Reference book open on my lap the whole time trying to figure this one out.......... I get the feeling that I'm going to kick myself when the answer is revealed but as of this time I'm flummoxed!!!!

Still working at it!!!!

Rick and Roll 09-15-2003 10:25 AM

too dedicated!

Actually, you just got "Bach" from a recital!:p

Groan!!!!!!!!!!!

Powerslave 09-16-2003 08:36 AM

Maybe

Are they all instrumental albums?

I know Djam Karet, Planet X, & Shylock are all instrumental, and I 'm pretty sure about Birdsongs and Giltrap. Is this the right track?

progdirjim 09-16-2003 11:49 AM

They are not all instrumental albums. Tantalus, Acqua Fragile, and Electrum, at least, have vocals.

First hint: You need to look deeper than the artist, the album name, the label, etc. Look at the contents of each album.

Avian 09-16-2003 03:15 PM

They all have songs with at least one number in them "Seven Masks", "Ground Zero", "One Hundred Cycles" (didn't check this the whole way through).

The order would be what the number is?

Avian

Rick and Roll 09-16-2003 03:27 PM

There is precedent

Since we've had a numerical question before, that would seem like a good guess.

progdirjim 09-16-2003 05:32 PM

Avian's got it!

The order is:
Planet X - Moonbabies - Ground ZERO
Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic - Petrophonics - ONE Hundred Cycles
Gordon Giltrap - Fear - Roots Part TWO
Acqua Fragile - THREE Hands Man
Mirthrandir - For You The Old Women - For FOUR
Weather Report - Tale Spinnin' - FIVE Short Stories
Shylock - Gialorgues - Le SIXieme
Sonus Umbra - Snapshots From Limbo - SEVEN Masks
Electrum - Standard Deviation - Seven Falls, EIGHT Rises
Tantalus - Jubal - Route Forty NINE
Djam Karet - Burning The Hard City - TEN Days To The Sand

There could have been one or two other orders possible.

Over to you, boss!

Rick and Roll 09-16-2003 09:13 PM

that's a neat one

not only #'s, but 1-10!

0-10, actually.

while we're waiting for Avian to pose a question, here's a quickie:

What is the common element in these three albums:

Rush - A Farewell To Kings
Supertramp - Breakfast In America
Happy The Man - Death's Crown

Besides that they're all on AM. If they were released in the same year or on the same label, that's a coincidence and therefore WRONG.

Rick and Roll 09-19-2003 12:23 PM

Here's one for you

They all have a vibra-slap in a song on the album.

KeithieW 09-19-2003 12:45 PM

They all have the same number of tracks on them......

progdirjim 09-20-2003 07:31 PM

Wrong (vibra-slap) and wrong (number of tracks).

Want a hint yet?

Rick and Roll 09-20-2003 08:55 PM

Sure

why not?

KeithieW 09-21-2003 03:16 AM

Want a hint?????

Does a bear s**t in the woods???

progdirjim 09-21-2003 10:31 AM

the answer is geographical in nature.

It may be geographical in nature but I'm lost.

BIA was recorded in LA and AFTK was recorded in Wales so it's not that.......

D'oh!!!

progdirjim 09-22-2003 11:28 AM

In no particular order, the three uniting items (one from each album) are:
album cover
song name
album title (though this one may be a bit obscure to some)

another useless clue - the answer is my hometown - and no, it's not San Diego - I moved here at age 22.

Rick and Roll 09-22-2003 11:54 AM

New Hollywood Torontocrownsville?

Damn, that's not it.

progdirjim 09-24-2003 01:11 PM

Did you guys give up or just lose interst? I didn't mean to post a thread killer....

KeithieW 09-24-2003 01:16 PM

Never give up!!!!

It's not a Thread Killer more a Mind F****r!!

Give me another day.

Avian 09-24-2003 01:17 PM

It's my turn, isn't it?

Okay how about...

Many folks know about Jimi Hendrix's plan to join ELP (HELP) before he died.

Come up with the funniest band acronyms based on band members. One example would be Robbie Kreiger with ELP (KELP). But any combo would do. I'll pick the funniest one.

Go!

Avian

progdirjim 09-24-2003 01:33 PM

Might as well give it to me now:

Mike Oldfield - keys and every other instrument known to man
Guy LeBlanc - keys
Al Dimeola - Guitar
Fish - vocals
Ian Anderson - vocals + flute
Trevor Rabin- guitar
Jannick Top - bass
Ringo Starr - drums

for: OLD FARTS

KeithieW 09-24-2003 01:35 PM

Someone had to do it so why not me?

I think this would make a GREAT prog band.

Daryl Way - Electric Violin
Jon Anderson - Vox
Bill Nelson - Guitar and Vox
Mick Karn - Bass
Keith Emerson - Keys
Todd Rundgren - Guitar and Vox
Chris Slade - Drums and Percussion

What a bunch of WANKERS!!

Rick and Roll 09-24-2003 01:36 PM

Jim and Avian

Jim - no, not a thread killer. Just haven't been tuned into it. Maybe Keith can crack it.

Avian - I wrote an article about 5 years ago that was put in a small-time progressive magazine, and then wrote another one that didn't make it (since the mag folded). It contains all kinds of silly combinations of musicians and musical styles, based on a parallel musical universe predicated on, oddly enough, the very same HELP matching you referenced (only if Hendrix did join)!

Question: it is quite long - should I just post it on this thread (is there a limit? I think the forum members would get a hell of a kick out of it. If OK, I'll write it up later this evening. You won't be disappointed!

KeithieW 09-24-2003 01:58 PM

Go for it Rick.....gives me an idea for another thread.

It probably means you'll get Avian's vote no problem but hey.......

Before I start the thread I'll ask Avian and Jim in a seperate note as it's a bit off topic.

KeithieW 09-24-2003 02:17 PM

Possible answer to Jim's question.

Is it New York.

BIA has New York on the cover.

Jim was born in New York.

The rest escape me but I hope you'll tell me some time.

progdirjim 09-24-2003 02:22 PM

Happy The Man Death's Crown has a song called "New York Dreams Suite"

A Farewell To Kings - Kings County, otherwise known as Brooklyn, is one of the boroughs of New York. This was the obscure one, but I thought it was wider known - I didn't think this question would be quite so hard. (In the liner notes, Rush does say "We remember Brooklyn!)

KeithieW 09-24-2003 02:27 PM

Thanks Jim.....I can sleep better now!!

You learn something new with AM every day. :)

Just pick the funniest few and post them here -

Avian

Rick and Roll 09-24-2003 03:38 PM

I see now

I got balled up over thinking it was a song off BIA (not the cover), and I have the first HTM which has the NY tune, and well, you get the idea.

A condensed version of the article (skipping the Phil Collins connection, who is the one constant between universes)-

Mitch Mitchell didn't have that extra drink, and HELM was born.
Carl Palmer went to "The Crazy World of Barry Manilow".
Hendrix didn't do as many drugs, eventually moved to France, renounced his US citizenship, thereby dooming the Seattle scene. Kurt Cobain went to LA, teamed up with Kenny Loggins, and put out "Footloose and Suicidal". Instead of the grunge scene as we know it, a new scene developed called YOGURT (Yuppie Original Grunge Underground Radio Tracks). Eddie Vedder was not a part, because he was working for Ticketmaster.

John Wetton ended up joining King Crimson when Lake should have - the first cut was "21st Century Ladies Man". The next two albums were titled "In The Waking Up With A Hooker" and "Lizard Tongue". Eventually Geddy Lee replaced Wetton, and Neil Peart joined Lee and Fripp as "The Power Trio League of Crafty Musicians". There was no Rush! Boo!

Bill Bruford stayed with Yes, and they collaborated with Wetton on "Open Your Thighs". Tony Levin ended up with Genesis, relegating Mike Rutherford to 20-string acoustic.

Hendrix killed himself after "Love Beach", and Robin Trower had no point of reference, became depressed, contracted an eating disorder, and put out "Bridge of Size".

Toni Iommi joined Jethro Tull, brought along Ozzy, and renamed the band "Jethro Sabbath". This band confused so many people, country music died out, leaving country artists to pair off with heavy metal artists, such as "The Dee Snider/Garth Brooks Explosion", "The Alice Cooper Project featuring Travis Tritt", and "The Ronnie James Duo" (RJD & Lee Ann Rimes).

I'll try a real acronym later.

progdirjim 09-24-2003 03:45 PM

that's beautiful! I, for one, would like to see the whole version - feel free to e-mail it to me...

KeithieW 09-24-2003 04:54 PM

Send it to me to Rick.

Excellent read.

Please send it to me.

I've updated my profile to show my address.

Rick and Roll 09-24-2003 08:43 PM

Thanks!

I may have to re-type it. I will also send the one that did make it in (about the influence of KC's "Discipline" on the whole way I looked at music). It may take a day or four, but I'll get to you two.

Here's one that isn't a band, but an intro to "Skating Away" on Tull's "Bursting Out"

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome to the stage, HACKS!

Rick and Roll 09-25-2003 11:16 AM

So far, we have

OLD FARTS
WANKERS
HACKS

now I see the theme here...

and Derek Shulman sang and played some sax - if he indeed pick up a guitar, he sure is a hack!

progdirjim 09-28-2003 12:08 AM

Here's another one - a sort of composer's consortium.

Keith Emerson
Philip Glass
Mike Oldfield

Nope, he played guitar.

Rick and Roll 09-30-2003 10:25 AM

I've spent enough time on this!

Ray is the bassist. Gary Green played guitar. Again, Derek only sang and played sax.

What possible shred of fact supports this? Did Derek pick up a guitar on a show in Tuscaloosa in 1977? Stop it! This is too reminiscent of the "Lines In The Sand" discussion!
