It was Jeff Berlin...........He'd played Bass with Bruford before and knew a lot of the Bass lines from Yes tracks like CTTE so he fitted in well.

You're correct. I didn't get to see Berlin play with AWBH, but I did manage to land the double CD from the San Jose concert. Can't say Berlin filled either Levin's or Squire's shoes, but I guess he held up his end.

Well, any time I see a question like this with the Police, I immediately think of Miles Copeland. I was able to find out that Copeland managed Caravan for a while, and had them on his record label as well, so that encouraged me to keep digging, but so far I haven't found anything else of note. Hmmm.

Need a clue.

Ach, I think you've given it away.

The Police's Stewart Copeland and UK's Eddie Jobson both played in Curved Air; both were teen prodigies that got their start with CA. The name of the band comes from Terry Riley's "A Rainbow in Curved Air." Band member Michael Wedgwood played with Caravan on two albums. Darryl Way also played with to-be-Caravan-member Dek Messecar.

So the connection is Curved Air, right? If so, thanks for the assist. This question was bugging me and my wife all weekend. (Sunday afternoon she got fed up with the whole thing and yelled, "England Dan and John Ford Coley! Just put that as your answer and be damned to it!")

Lots of Curved Air connections. Darryl Way played on Tull's Heavy Horses, some Gong albums, and other session work. Francis Monkman was a member of 801 and Sky, among others. Greenslade's drummer Tony Reeves was a member of CA for a bit. Sonja Kristina sang on the original cast album of "Hair," and did a 1971 Christmas gig with the Faces, members of Soft Machine, and others.

As you can see, I've garnered some material off the Web to answer this question. Good one!

I was speaking with Robby (violin) over several drinks after a show in Atlantic City and from what my brain can pull out of that night... he said somethign about Cheap Trick. He said steve played keys for them off stage during one of the tours, but i believe that was during one of the Kansas era's without Steve.

Good guess, but no. Hints: he was a full member of Hawkwind for a long time (one of the few true musical virtuosos to play with that band of rapscallions); he played alongside Belew with Bowie.

If you really want to amuse yourself with Hawkwind cheese, see if you can find the book "Time of the Hawklords." Simon is one of the major characters. It's a most awful comic book-like thing about the band saving post-apocalyptic Earth from doom and destruction by becoming superheroes, kicking villainous ass, and playing music (theirs is the ONLY music that will keep people sane; meanwhile, the bad guys strike back with Yes, 10CC, Tony Orlando, and other "bad" music).

Not just cheese, but spray cheese. :D
