At 23 minutes, it's mediocre. The other factor is I probably heard Echoes more times in any single high school year than I've heard Atom Heart Mother in my life - so the "familiarity breeds contempt" factor may be coming into play.
I enjoy both tracks very much! Both great 20 minute epics in my opinon!:)

this and that

EP - Tongue in cheek? A weird way of showing it.

Jim - I still agree with your Echoes assessment, in part. I do think however, 15 minutes is OK. It's really just the Chinese water-torture piano at the beginning and the middle that's annoying. Hell, the guitar lead is almost 5 itself!

Two questions - 1) what's the difference between "one of my favorites" and "one of their best"? Whose standards determine their best? If its one of your favorites, that's cool, you don't need to qualify it. No need to "troll". It's just that you throw yourself open to criticism when you're critical of others' favorites.

2) If Atom Heart Mother is a bit disjointed, doesn't that inherently mean it's really a bunch of songs thrown together under the disguise of one long tune? Maybe that's one that could be cut down a little.

PTF - Are there any Floyd tunes you don't like? If so, what would they be? I'm curious.

How come no one mentioned Several Species of Small etc etc etc as a favorite? Between that and Grenchester Meadows you've got one of the weirdest and the quietest songs on one record. Maybe Keith came close with his early-Floyd selections. Actually GG's "An Inmates Lullaby" is both weird AND quiet.

Hmm...maybe just Seamus...I can stand the New Machine's from AMLOR! Sysypus does not do much to me either, though I like Mr.Wright's efforts!!! & that is it...I love the More Soundtrack for sure! :D

I love that track as well! Not my favorite but it is trippy & fun!:)

Amazing what this thread turned out to be!!! I just asked a simple question! ;)

Rick and Roll 08-29-2003 08:31 AM

Those are good ones

The only other Floyd I'm not enamored of is the later sections of The Wall. There are some gems on that record, but some stinkers too.

Yeah, I've never really cared for New Machine or Dogs of War. In fact, they're probably the weakest floyd songs ever.

Tommy

Hmm, how about a worst prog songs thread?

Rick and Roll 08-29-2003 08:50 AM

A Dog of a song

Agree - Dogs of War tries to sound too "tough".

Worst songs by band or overall? Sounds like a thread that may last awhile!

"Chinese Water Torture" - I wish I'd thought of saying that! Yeah, maybe 5 minutes would be cutting it short. Maybe I'll listen with a stopwatch and see if I can get 10 good minutes out of it (tongue firmly in cheek.)

Difference between favorite and best - I could make an argument that musically speaking (compositionally, difficulty in playing, etc) Echoes is a BETTER piece of music than Learning To Fly - but I still prefer LTF. "Best" is still, of course, subjective, but an attempt to objectify it can be made. "Favorite" is impossible to make objective. But then, that's the reason for the troll - to hear others defend their favorite, or to criticize mine. It's almost always an interesting discussion, even if it ultimately goes nowhere (not unlike Echoes, coincidentally.) :D

AHM - a series of tunes strung together? perhaps - but I still prefer listening to it than Echoes. I don't get bored, nor am I tempted to scream listening to it.

Early Floyd.

Another of their tracks I like is 'Intersteller Overdrive'

I think Syd was very underated. This track really goes places.

On the 'Echoes' subject. I've always liked this track especially when it was used in the film Crystal Voyager. It fitted in SO well with all those waves.

The Electronic section in the middle always conjures up a picture of a lonely lighthouse on a rock in the middle of the ocean with it's beacon sweeping across the water.

Rick and Roll 09-02-2003 08:16 AM

Syd etc

You probably are right about Syd being underrated, but my feeling is that he is unduly canonized as some kind of borderline genius where he was really just a tripped-out guitar player.

Interstellar is cool.

I never thought about the waves/lighthouse thing - neat. Another "vision" that comes to mind is "Diamond Head". On the studio, Manzanera makes it sound like cliff diving in Mexico. On the 801 live, it sounds like the Earth 24 hours after the final bomb hits.

I'm going to have to take another listen.

BTW: Just taken delivery of the "Chaos Code" albums......excellent band. Also heard "Eloy" today very Tull/Crimson/Floyd sound. Saw that Amazon had the two Chronacles albums for less than a tenner so I had to invest. If you haven't head them before check them out I think they may be to your taste.

Rick and Roll 09-02-2003 10:11 AM

Eloy

Looking on the website - it looks like they have a lot of records (there's quite a few before the compilations). When I get back to regular work, I'm going to get some of these! The samples are excellent.

Yesspaz 09-02-2003 10:33 AM

Uh Oh!

Uh Oh Jim, it Looks like someone just requested Echoes! (10:23am CST - Tuesday).

Anyhoo, here's my two cents:

I also don't get the general dislike of Momentary Lapse
I'm with you Jim. It's not my favorite, but if you take out "The Dogs of War," it's a solid album. However, I've got to go with "On the Turning Away" and "Sorrow" for my picks off that one.

Echoes, hah? I feel like Yesspaz awhile back on the Genesis thread, when he didn't get the adoration of Supper's Ready - that's how I feel about Echoes.
Attaboy Jim! While I completely disagree with you, props for posting your contempt. While it's listenable, I still say "Supper's Not Ready." When I posted that, I was afraid I'd get mail-bombed!

You mean like any epic by Rush? (The Fountain of Lamneth, 2112).

Ha! I like AHM, but they could have chopped it off before the last six minutes.

I think they're ok if taken as part of Terminal Frost, making Terminal Frost and 8 minute song, then it fits thematically.

Rick and Roll 09-02-2003 10:46 AM

Agree with On The Turning Away. A very pretty song, and Gilmour takes his throat medicine prior to singing it. Reminds me of "You Know I'm Right" or "Near The End" from his About Face album.

Another Rush dig?:p

It's a good thing that we're not in a band, we might last a few weeks before "musical differences" keeps us from completing a song!:D

Actually, an Ozric Tentacles setup would work, with Keith as Generator John.
