What possible shred of fact supports this? Did Derek pick up a guitar on a show in Tuscaloosa in 1977? Stop it! This is too reminiscent of the "Lines In The Sand" discussion!

Nurse, The screens!!!!!

Rick and Roll 09-30-2003 10:36 AM

Keith

I'm not up on that reference "Nurse the screens" - please help!

And being the hack I am, how do you use quotes from others in a post, and how do you use the shoutbox?

KeithieW 09-30-2003 10:52 AM

Shout box, Quotes and Nurses.

You have to log in to the AM Home page....it's a different Id to the forums page and then you can SHOUT to your fellow AM listeners who are on-line.

Click on the quote button instead of Add Reply and you can edit the bit you want to quote.

Nurse the Screens is a reference to the "Carry on films" that were popular over here in the 60s and 70s. They were rather stuffed full of inuendo.

It loses a lot in translation and now I can't remember why I wrote it.

Rick and Roll 09-30-2003 11:05 AM

Carry On

Could you have meant it for the other post? ("Ripoffs").

I'll try that shout later on, maybe, thanks!

This is from AMG...

Gentle Giant was born out of the ruins of Simon Dupree & the Big Sound, an R&B-based outfit led by brothers Derek, Ray, and Phil Shulman. After switching to psychedelia in 1967 and scoring their only major hit that year with "Kites," as Gentle Giant the group abandoned both the R&B and psychedelic orientations of the previous band; Derek sang and played guitar and bass, Ray played sang and played bass and violin, and Phil handled the saxophone, augmented by Kerry Minnear on keyboards, and Gary Green on guitar. Their original lineup also featured Martin Smith on drums, but they went through several percussionists in the first three years of their existence.

Boo-Yah!

Rick and Roll 10-02-2003 10:39 AM

So what?

They never let him play guitar on vinyl, that's all I care about.

Here's my point:

Your acronym was HACKS. Do you mean HACKS like amateurs? In that case, the other four members of the "band" are established prog mainstays on their instrument of choice. The inclusion of Mr. Shulman in that company is suspect, especially when S is a very easy letter to find a guitarist.

I guess I read the question to come up with an acronym that means something, like OLD FARTS or EGO.

Now all of that being said, I didn't come up with any (except for that silly Tull comment I made), so maybe I should stop worrying about this and make up a few!

progdirjim 10-02-2003 01:05 PM

well, one should be careful about getting their information from AMG - they're usually right, but I've seen mistakes there before...

Yesspaz 10-02-2003 04:39 PM

HACKS is sarcastic. Ok, I change my guitarist to Steve Stevens.

Dave Hope
Jon Anderson
Damon Che
Igor Koreschev
Steve Stevens

Yeah, they have Tony Palacios listen as "rap," but they have a picture of his metal band Guardian. Figure that one out.

Rick and Roll 10-02-2003 06:54 PM

Steve Stevens

ooh....Double S's!!!!!

Yesspaz 10-03-2003 11:41 AM

back to the quiz

So, What do these have in common?

Jethro Tull
Don Caballero
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Billy Mahonie
Chagall Guevara

This is so rediculously easy, but it gets us back on track.

PS, who won the band ackronym contest? I vote for HACKS, but of course, I would, wouldn't I?

Bob Lentil 10-03-2003 03:05 PM

They're all bands named after people.

Rick and Roll 10-03-2003 03:24 PM

or

people not in the band - I'm dying to hear the connection between the high school gym teacher and the 18th century agriculturalist!

But, I'll be gone for a day or so - have fun!

Nope, but close...

Yesspaz 10-03-2003 11:42 PM

I'll be gone

Well, I'll be awol from internet access until next Thursday, so I'll go ahead and answer the question. It's silly really. All are bands that can be mistaken for solo artists. So are named after people, but some aren't.

Yet, it was off the top of my head.

I didn't know you guys were going away together.........have fun!!! :)

I reckon Rick was almost there with his comments about people NOT being in the band.

As he's away here's a little tester until he gets back:

Who was it said ""Rock journalism is people who can't write interviewing people who can't talk for people who can't read."

Ouch!!!

Rick and Roll 10-04-2003 07:45 PM

where are we?

Would someone like to put us back on track?

KeithieW 10-05-2003 12:05 PM

Bob, it's over to you!!!!!

Yes it was Frank Zappa.........

Never one to say the wrong thing and upset anyone was our Frank.

Next question please.

Rick and Roll 10-07-2003 08:01 AM

A quick one

There's a Genesis tune covered by a US Prog band (that has songs on Aural Moon). The CD name that the cover version is on is a variation of the name of of the song.

What's the song, band, and CD name?
